Gurugram: ‘Not cleaned for 7 years, water tank in Sector 45 poses health risk’

GURUGRAM: The underground storage tank in Sector 45, which supplies drinking water to around 2,000 households in the area, has not been cleaned by the civic body for over seven years, alleged residents.

They said the MCG has also not deployed an official to ensure that the drinking water supplied from the tank is not contaminated.

“The cover of the tank is broken and uncovered electricity cables are lying around in the area which is also encroached by slum dwellers. We have made several complaints to MCG officials, urging them to clean the underground water tank which has not been maintained by them for over seven years. Also, the motor pump of the tank has been lying dysfunctional since July 2021. The civic body, however, has not taken any action so far despite repeated complaints,” OP Yadav, RWA president of Sector 45.

Residents alleged that the tank should be cleaned by the civic body at least twice a year. “The tank has not been cleaned for over seven years now. Over 10,000 people are living in the area. They are forced to use the water supplied from the tank. This is posing a health risk to the residents living in the sector. We are paying water charges to the MCG. It is the civic body’s responsibility to ensure that residents get clean drinking water. Even after several efforts to apprise the civic body of the dilapidated condition of the tank, officials have not started the chlorination process,” Puneet Pahwa, general secretary, RWA, Sector 45.

When contacted by TOI, Vishal Garg, executive engineer of MCG, said, “I took charge of this area recently and am not aware about the matter. I will direct the official concerned to examine the complaints of residents. Usually, we clean underground water tanks once a year, but it also depends on the amount of silt accumulated in tanks. If required, we clean them frequently.”
