Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s floodcheck plan: Chutes, road gullies to drain water & creek cleanup

Gurugram: A day after a two-hour rain spell left many parts of the city inundated and triggered a 3km tailback on the upscale Golf Course Road, officials of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Friday visited some of the worst-affected areas to determine the reasons for the waterlogging and find solutions to the same.

According to the GMDA officials, among the residents who faced difficulties on Thursday were those residing in Valley View Estate in Gwalpahari, where the basement and the ground floor of one of the society’s towers got flooded, also leading to interruption in power supply. The situation was finally resolved by using tractor-mounted pumps to drain out the accumulated water.

Elaborating on their findings during a site visit on Friday morning, the GMDA officials said that the problem occurred due to the dumping of construction and development (C&D) waste in the natural creek near the society. The fact that the boundary wall of the society located closest to the creek had several gaps led to the accumulated water seeping into the building.

Vikram Singh, executive engineer of infrastructure 2 division of GMDA, said, “A natural creek flows between the boundary walls of Valley View Estate and Paras Quartier housing society on this stretch. It was found that major portions of the wall of Valley View were damaged and had gaps that allowed the water from the creek to flow into the society’s premises. We have asked the residents to get a new wall built.”

The accumulated C&D waste in the drains along the Gurgaon-Faridabad road, meanwhile, has also been cleared to facilitate quick discharge of stormwater into the drainage pipes, said the GMDA officials.

Among the areas where commuters faced difficulties on Thursday was Golf Course Road, which received 6 cm of rainfall. With the showers occurring just before the evening peak hours, waterlogging at AIT Chowk led to a 3km tailback of vehicles along the stretch, which houses several gated condominiums, malls and offices.

GMDA officials, following their site inspection on Friday, said that additional road gullies would be created to prevent the recurrence of the chaos.

“To address the waterlogging concerns, extra water chutes are being made at AIT Chowk to help the water recede at a faster pace during heavy showers. Additional road gullies are also being developed near La Lagune society on Golf Course Road,” said a senior GMDA official.

Water chutes are channels meant to direct runoff to a pre-determined outlet area, while road gullies are created along the edges of roads to help drain out water accumulated at roadsides.
