Gurugram: Employer away, staff steals cash & jewellery from South City-1 home

GURUGRAM: A domestic staff of a retired Air India employee allegedly stole cash and jewellery amounting to Rs 35 lakh from the latter’s house in South City-1 on Sunday. The complainant and his family had left the house in the staff’s care for a few hours to visit a relative. Police said the man is absconding and his mobile phone is switched off. An FIR has been filed against him.

Ravi Handa (65) had hired Vinod Saud as a domestic staff on March 8 this year. Saud used to do all the household work and stayed with Handa and his family in his South City-1 house.

According to police, the staff whom Handa’s family had previously employed left the job earlier this year. They came in touch with Saud through a reference and hired him as full-time staff and provided him accommodation inside their house as well. On Sunday, Handa and his family went to visit a relative in Rohini area of Delhi. They left the house around 5.30pm in Saud’s care. When they returned around midnight, to their surprise, the main gate of the house was open.

They went inside and found that the entire house had been ransacked.

According to the complainant, around Rs 20 lakh in cash, jewellery amounting to Rs 10 lakh, imported watches worth Rs 5 lakh and other valuables were missing. Saud was nowhere to be found and his mobile phone was switched off. “We suspect he was waiting to be alone in the house and made away with the cash and jewellery after we left,” Handa said.

On the basis of his complaint, an FIR was registered against Saud under Section 381 (theft by servant or employee) of the IPC at Sector 40 police station on Monday. “We are scanning CCTV footage of the area to find out if Saud acted alone or someone else was also involved in the crime. Apart from this, police are trying to track him through technical and other means of investigation.” police spokesperson Subhash Boken said.
