GURUGRAM: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will start a pilot project to provide 24-hour water supply to at least four sectors in the city as part of an initiative by the Union ministry of urban development. The civic body has identified Sector 15 (parts 1 & 2) and sectors 4, 7 and 54 for the project, with officials saying that a consultant will be hired within 10 days to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). These areas, currently, receive nearly two to four hours of water supply.
“MCG will hire a consultant within 10 days to prepare the DPR for supplying round-the-clock water supply in these sectors. We earlier identified nine sectors for the project but will begin with four,” said Vivek Gill, superintending engineer, MCG. He, however, added that the number of areas to be covered under the pilot project could be increased or reduced based on the DPR.
A survey will be conducted to check the sectors' water pressure and infrastructure requirements for the DPR preparations. After the DPR is ready, MCG will float a tender and invite private agencies to work on the project. The agencies, officials said, will lay the water pipelines and other infrastructure and ensure their maintenance and monitoring.
Recently, MCG officials, including MCG chief engineer Thakur Lal Sharma and superintending engineer Vivek Gill, attended a meeting in Delhi on the Union ministry project to provide a 24-hour water supply to residents. The pilot in the city will be along the lines of Puri’s “drink from tap mission”, providing clean water round-the-clock. The civic body, said officials, will hire government–empanelled consultants for the project.
“We get water supply for one hour each in the morning and the evening. There is no power supply for a large part of the day during wh-ich we cannot switch on the motors. The pressure of water is also quite low. Moreover, MCG has provided drinking water connections to several under-construction buildings in our area, and drinking water is used in construction activities, wasting a lot of it. The 24-hour water supply will help resolve the water crisis, which is worse in the summer,” said VK Singh, a resident of Sector 54.
