But how much do you really know about this American linguist, philosopher and political activist? The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand will screen Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media which illustrates his message of how government and giant media businesses are in cahoots to produce a propaganda machine to sway the public's opinions. This much-lauded 1992 documentary film won 20 awards and have been shown in over 30 markets. Thai subtitles are provided in partnership with Thailand Documentary Club.

Art
+ PERSPECTIVES ON FREEDOM
ILLUSIONS OF LIBERTY, YENAKART ART GALLERY, UNTIL JAN 31
Jirapat Tatsanasomboon's quest for liberty has moved from a collective to a more individual perspective, thus being more universal, addressing more directly the problems of social inequalities and democracy, freedom of expression and morality in politics. In this new solo show he will exhibit 22 paintings -- never before seen -- in his very recognisable iconographic style, made of bright colours and references to pop-art while transposing Thai traditional figures into Western culture, and vice versa.
Wed-Fri, 2pm-7pm, Sat 11am-7pm. YenakArt Villa, Soi Prasat Suk. http://fb.com/yenakartvilla, 081-902-9196.
+ WHAT'S HAPPENING NEXT DOOR
RAGE FOR THE ROHINGA, WTF BAR AND GALLERY, DEC 7
There's a catastrophe taking place next door. More than half a million Rohingya have been purged from their homes in Myanmar since August 25, bringing the total number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to over one million. It's the fastest-growing refugee crisis since Rwanda in 1994 -- and the UN has called it "textbook ethnic cleansing". There will be photos of the crisis by some great photojournalists, a talk with experts, and opportunities to take political action. You can help -- by buying a drink. Proceeds from your drinks will go towards providing essential medical aid.
8pm. WTF Bar and Gallery, Sukhumvit Soi 51. http://fb.com/WTFGalleryandCafe, 02-662-6246.
+ TERROR AND DRUGS
THE NIGHT CRAWLERS OF MANILA, SEA-JUNCTION BACC, DEC 9-10
The weekend of Dec 9-10 is devoted to the Philippines and its current conditions. After a public lecture "Quo Vadis Philippines" on Dec 9 at 5pm by historian and former chair of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Maria Serena I Diokno, on Dec 10 at 5pm the photographer Raffy Lerma will talk about the work and mission of the "Night Crawlers of Manila", an unofficial group of journalists, some working for media agencies, but mostly freelancers who have been covering the war on drugs. Raffy Lerma's presentation will provide illustrations of the war on drugs and explain what is moving the Night Crawlers, stressing the role of photojournalism. This compliments "The Night Shift" exhibition currently happening at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand.
Dec 9-10, 5pm. Suite 408 BACC, Rama 1 Road. http://goo.gl/LV2DMq, 097-002-4140.
+ COLOURFUL CHARACTERS
SILENT RAVAGE, S.A.C SUBHASHOK THE ARTS CENTRE, UNTIL DEC 3

Aof Smith returns to Subhashok the Arts Centre in this solo exhibition. The Bangkok-based artist has cultivated a following among collectors and artists in Thailand. Greatly influenced by American pop-surrealism, Smith maintains the dream-scape of the surrealists and the celebration of the shallow world often linked to pop art. Smith's personal sense of colours brings forward vivid and full-flavoured visuals that add dimension and volume to the layers of characters in his works.
Tue-Sat, 10am-5:30pm, Sun, noon-6pm, Mon, Closed. S.A.C. Subhashok The Arts Centre, Sukhumvit Soi 39.
http://fb.com/sacbangkok, 02-662-0299.
+ DOWN WITH DOW
IN SEARCH OF SELF, KATHMANDU PHOTO GALLERY, UNTIL DEC 28
According to Carl Jung, the rocks in Dow Wasiksiri's dream symbolises the ego. A keen student of psychology and inspired by a dream, Dow brought the rocks to life in the series In Search of Self (1982), in which red rocks emerge from a lavatory and a swimming pool, resulting in indelibly surreal images. The rocks are very much alive with intent as they go about their adventures, in their preoccupations known only to themselves. This exhibition revisits the early surrealist work of the celebrated Thai contemporary photo-artist Dow Wasiksiri, and includes the silently eerie Mysterious Shell (1993) alongside the red rocks.
Tue-Sat, 11am-6pm. Kathmandu Photo Gallery, Pan Road. http://fb.com/kathmanduphotogallery, 02-234-6700.
+ WRAPPED UP IN THE RENAISSANCE
RENAISSANCE RETREAT, RIVER CITY BANGKOK, UNTIL DEC 9

Italian artist Saverio Lucci will present some of his pieces that represent the 16th century Eucausto technique on wood, showing such skills through the spirit of feminine portraits. According to Lucci, the feminine soul is what resides within all of us and a direct line and connection from the soul to the spirit is always between us. Lucci has absorbed the techniques of the great masters, unearthing the forgotten secrets of the ancients. He is a storyteller and a witness of our time, showing us that art is where humanity discovers and reveals itself.
Open daily, 10am-10pm. River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung Soi 24. www.rivercitybangkok.com, 02-237-7600.

+ SYMBOLS OF WORSHIP
THE GARDEN OF GOD, DUKE CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE, UNTIL DEC 10

This solo exhibition by artist Kriangkrai Kongkhanan presents the imaginations of a garden in a secret land where gods live, worshipped as symbols of prosperity, stability, happiness and success in life. Images of such gods and their auspicious symbols represent certain needs in human minds, which form emotions. The artist's vivid and colourful portrayals of these entities is hugely revealing of his ability to capture such majestic powers.
Open daily, 11am-midnight. Duke Contemporary Art Space, Gaysorn Village. http://fb.com/duke.gaysorn, 094-647-8888.
