'Gunshots' heard amid series of 'linked incidents' in Ayrshire as cops launch probe

Cops have launched an investigation after a series of 'reckless and dangerous' incidents in North Ayrshire which included 'gunshots' being heard in Saltcoats over the weekend.

Police were first alerted to a 'disturbance' on Eglinton Road in Ardrossan at around 1am on Friday, August 12. Emergency services, including cops and the Scottish Ambulance Service, sped to the scene.

Upon arrival, a vehicle was found to have been damaged and a 20-year-old man was taken to Crosshouse Hospital to be treated for a head injury in what officers believe was a targeted attack.

Later that day, around 11pm, the alarm was raised after a car was found on fire on McDowall Avenue, again in Ardrossan - but nobody was injured during the incident.

Then around 7.30pm on Saturday, August 13, 'gunshots' were heard on Munro Walk in the neighbouring town of Saltcoats but police confirmed there were no injuries reported.

Officers are now probing all three events, which they are treating as linked, and want anyone with information to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Stephen McCulloch said: “We believe that these incident are all linked, and targeted. The actions of those involved are extremely reckless and dangerous and it is vital we bring this to a stop.

“One man has already had to attend hospital with a serious injury.

“We are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward, think back – were you in any of these area of Ardrossan or Saltcoats at the time? Did you see or hear anything untoward?

“We would also ask anyone with any dash-cam footage to come forward, you may have captured something that can help us.

“We will have extra patrols across the coming days, anyone with any concerns should speak to an officer or call 101, or 999 in an emergency.”

People should call police via 101, quoting incident number 3605 of Saturday, 13 August, 2022 or contact CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where information can be given in confidence.
