Gunshots around the corner as police investigate Chicago homicide: 'These kids ain't scared of nothing'

CHICAGO _ As neighbors watched police work the scene of a fatal shooting on a West Side block, seven gunshots rang out from around the corner late Tuesday night.

About a dozen officers sprinted down the street and more patrol cars rolled in.

"Shooting when police are right here," a man muttered on his porch.

Police cars lined the street in the 4700 block of West Congress Parkway in West Garfield Park. A helicopter buzzed overheard.

Around 9:30 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the head in a backyard on the street, Chicago police said. He was pronounced dead on scene. About an hour and a half later, shots were fired about two blocks away at Kilpatrick and Gladys avenues. No one was hit.

"They're not scared of the police," said a man who owns a building on the street. "These kids ain't scared of nothing."

Four other people were shot in Chicago between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, according to police.
