Two gunmen fired shots at officers who saw them shoot a man Friday in Garfield Park on the West Side, according to police.

About 6:37 p.m., officers in a marked squad car in the 3800 block of West Adams Street saw two males get out of a gray Dodge Caravan and unleash gunfire at a group of people standing on the street, Chicago police said.

The shooters turned their gunfire towards the officers before driving off in the Dodge, police said. The officers did not return fire and were not struck in the shooting.

A 24-year-old man was hit in the side and abdomen but was able to take himself to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said. Another person fell and scraped their knee at the scene.

Officers pursued the Dodge and stopped it at Adams and Karlov Avenue where one of the gunmen ran off, police said. The other was arrested and a handgun was recovered.

The car had been reported stolen, police said. Charges are pending against a man in custody.

Area North detectives are investigating.
