Gunman wounded, ending hostage standoff at UPS facility in New Jersey

PHILADELPHIA _ A standoff between police and a gunman who took his ex-girlfriend and another woman hostage at a UPS facility in Gloucester County ended after about 3 { hours Monday, when the suspect was shot and wounded.

The hostages were not harmed.

It was not immediately clear if the gunman shot himself at the Logan Township facility or was wounded by police during what Gloucester County Prosecutor Charles Fiore described only as an "intervention" before noon.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, but his condition wasn't immediately known.

Fiore said the standoff began about 8:30 a.m. when the gunman entered the building and fired some shots.

He then took the two women hostage, Fiore said.

Hostage negotiators had been talking to the man by telephone before the standoff ended with gunfire.

Other employees in the building in an industrial park were evacuated and taken from the scene to a nearby hotel in pair of school buses, officials said.

Officials stressed the situation was contained to the UPS building and that other workers at the industrial park were not in danger. UPS described the site as a supply chain processing facility.

TV news helicopter video showed a SWAT team armored car and officers crouched behind vehicles at a loading dock at the facility.

Schools in Logan Township were on a "modified lockdown" during the standoff, according to the district's website, which said all students and staff were safe.
