Gunman targeted home where 'family of three live'

A house occupied by "a family of three" was targeted by a gunman in a shooting which left nearby residents shocked.

Shots were fired at the front of a property in East Dam Wood Road in Speke shortly after 11pm last night (Sunday).

Police were called after reports of "a loud bang" being heard.

No injuries were reported, but the front of the house was left badly damaged after being blasted with what was believed to be a shotgun.

The street was sealed off immediately afterwards, but by lunchtime today only the house which was targeted remained behind a police cordon.

The front window of the terraced house could clearly be seen shot out and there was shattered glass on the patio area in front of the property.

People living in the area are still coming to terms with a shooting in their neighbourhood - the first in more than three years, according to police.

One said: "I was dozing off when I was woken by a big bang. I didn't know what it was. I've only just found out it was a shooting.

"You don't expect it to be so close to your home. I've got kids and I'm a bit worried.

"I couldn't go to work this morning because the road was cordoned off."

Another resident said: "I believe a family of three live there - the mum, the dad, and their son.

"The first I became aware of it was when I saw all the blue lights flashing outside.

"I didn't realise it was a shooting until later."

A third resident said: "It's a regular thing now. As long as they leave us alone."

Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald of the Firearms Investigation Team said: "We're keen to speak to any witnesses or those who have since heard any information. Whether you saw or heard the incident or anyone making off, check your CCTV, dashcam or other devices and come forward.

"It initially appears that this was a targeted attack, which thankfully didn't result in anyone being injured. To fire a gun in a residential area is extremely reckless and could have led to tragedy, so if you know anything, tell us and we'll take action.

"Shootings have decreased across Merseyside in recent months and in Speke, this is first such incident for more than three years.

"Key to such good news is the information and resolve of that community to ensure the area is a hostile place for criminals to operate in. We're determined to find those responsible and remove them and their weapon from the streets."
