Gunman shot by armed police on Durham street in dramatic moment caught on video

Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment armed police officers in Durham shot and wounded a whisky-drinking gunman.

The clip shows Sam Houlihan sat in a vehicle on Rochester Close on 25 May last year, clutching a Sig Sauer P226 air pistol and ignoring the police officers surrounding the car.

The 24-year-old bought the weapon on the morning of the shooting, after he lied and told a shop assistant he was not banned from owning a firearm.

CCTV shows him buying whisky from a conveninence store before returning to the vehicle.

A member of the public saw Mr Houlihan with the weapon and immediately alerted police officers.

The gunman could be seen crossing himself as he sat inside the vehicle and brandished the weapon.

He also ignored repeated requests by officers not to raise the air pistol.

“As a consequence, he was shot and sustained a wound to his arm,” Durham Constabulary said in a statement.

“The officers immediately approached Houlihan and gave him first aid until paramedics arrived.”

The 24-year-old was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order under the Mental Health Act on Friday.
