Gunman shoots victim then flees on foot

Locals expressed concern after a man was shot in the back on a north Liverpool street.

Police were called out to Richard Kelly Drive in Walton at around 9.50pm last night following reports that a man had been shot. A 43-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his back was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital.

Police said his injuries were not life-threatening. The gunman was believed to have been on foot.

There was a police cordon in place at the scene this morning, opposite the nearby Asda supermarket.

A local man said: "There has been some suspicious activity in the area recently. I have seen cars pulling up and people popping their heads in to speak to the drivers. Not sure what is going on there.

"And there is a passageway that runs off Richard Kelly Drive which is mainly used by locals. But a few things have gone on down there too."

A woman who lived nearby said: "This is known as the posh bit of Richard Kelly Drive. It's mainly elderly residents along this row. We did not hear a thing last night until the police turned up after 10."

Mums taking their children to school had to walk around the police cordon which started at the junction with Utting Avenue. The incident happened across the road from the Asda and just off Queens Drive.

A police spokesman said: "Emergency services attended and paramedics provided treatment at the scene to the 43-year-old victim, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his back, which is not believed to be life threatening.

"He has been taken to hospital where he is being treated. Officers believe the incident occurred by the roundabout at the top of Richard Kelly Drive near to Queens Drive and the offender is believed to have been on foot."

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: "I would like to reassure the local community that we will be doing possible to find the person responsible.

"The force is committed to tackling gun crime, but we can't do it on our own. We need people from the community who may have any information which could help us to contact us.

"The area around Richard Kelly Drive is always busy, if you saw anyone acting suspiciously please call. Any information provided will be acted upon.

"Help us to put this person where he belongs - behind bars. If you have any information at all, which may help us piece together the evidence we require, please call."
