Gunman opens fire on house as neighbours sleep

A man was seen on a pedal bike close to the scene of an incident in which shots were fired at the front window of a house.

Officers were called to a semi-detached property in Simon's Croft, Netherton , shortly after midnight.

On arrival, they found damage to a living room window consistent with a firearms discharge.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

This morning residents in the densely populated area woke up to a police cordon surrounding the property and closing off a number of surrounding roads.

Parents taking their children to school were forced to negotiate a way around the cordon, while others had to make a long detour to access a nearby convenience store and a chemist's.

Crime scene investigators were also at the scene.

One resident said she heard nothing at the time of the incident, so was surprised to see the large police presence when she woke up this morning.

"It's not a nice thing to happen in the middle of a residential area," she said.

"It seems to be happening everywhere."

Police confirmed they were appealing for witnesses following the incident in the early hours of Monday.

An investigation was under way and house-to-house and CCTV enquiries were being carried out in the local area.

Detective Inspector Cat Walsh said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Simons Croft at around midnight last night who may have seen anyone or anything suspicious to contact us.

"We are particularly keen to trace a male who was see on a pedal bike close the scene at the time it happened.

"I would also ask for anyone who was in the area and who may have dash-cam footage to contact us as they may have captured something significant."

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
