Gunman opens fire in north Manchester street as armed police swoop

Armed police swooped after a gunman opened fire on a north Manchester street. Specialist firearms officers were called to Halliwell Lane in Cheetham Hill at about 10.50pm on Friday.

No-one has been reported injured, but police say they found 'evidence of what is believed to have been a firearm discharge'. A cordon was put in place while an investigation was carried out.

It came just hours after shots were fired on a street in Oldham after residents reported hearing a 'loud bang'. Armed police were scrambled to Ripponden Road just before 6pm on Friday.

A cordon was put in place on nearby Broadbent Road where Greater Manchester Police said previously that 'an incident may have occurred'. GMP have today confirmed a firearm was discharged and an investigation is underway. No arrests have been made.

A section of Broadbent Road was taped off with officers stationed at the cordon. One local said: "I heard a bang, we thought it was car jumping to be honest. It was really loud.”

Another said that a car was spotted 'driving away at speed'. She told the Manchester Evening News : "A car was seen driving off at speed. I was well scared. Was just getting my Friday night chippy and that happened.

"It was packed out as you can imagine when someone came in shouting about it then next minute all this commotion. It happened in a matter of seconds."

Police are appealing for witnesses to both incidents. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or report it anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
