Gunman opens fire at Merseyside primary school

A gunman opened fire at an empty primary school on Easter Sunday before staff responded to a security alert.

Armed police were called to Rimrose Hope Church of England Primary School, on Sandy Road in Seaforth, at around 6.30pm after a call from staff.

Staff from the school went to the primary school just before 6pm after a security alert.

The ground were inspected and the staff member discovered damage to a shutter that was closed over one of the doors.

Armed police swooped on the school and later confirmed that a gun had been fired at the shutter.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed on Monday evening that no one was found at the school when police arrived.

No one is reported to have been injured in the shooting but an investigation is still ongoing.

In a statement, the force said: "Officers are investigating reports of a firearms discharge which caused damage to a primary school in Liverpool.
