Gunman on the run after blasting young victim in head - as attempted murder investigation continues

A gunman is on the run after blasting a young victim in the head. The victim is in a stable condition following the shooting in north Manchester earlier this week.

Officers were scrambled to Ermington Drive in Cheetham Hill just before midnight on Wednesday (June 21). It followed reports of shots being fired. A young man in his 20s was found unconscious in the street.

He had suffered serious injury, which the Manchester Evening News understands was a gunshot wound.

The man was rushed to hospital. He is in a serious but stable condition with his family at his side, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said in an update issued on Saturday (June 24).

An attempted murder investigation has been launched. No arrests have been made, but detectives say they are 'following all leads'.

GMP have ramped up patrols in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Gina rennand from GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “I would like to reassure the community in Cheetham Hill that we are continuing our investigations and following all leads.

"I can confirm that this is a firearms enabled attempted murder investigation. This must be a very worrying incident for those living and working in the area.

"We have provided visible reassurance in the area in the form of on-foot patrol officers, vehicle patrols and covert patrols. Most importantly, all of our staff are there to listen and respond to anything you wish to tell us about this investigation or the wider issues being experienced by residents.

"Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate violence of any form and we will continue to work together with partners to achieve this.

A large cordon was in place at the scene, close to the former Dover Castle pub in front of a housing estate and a flat complex, following the incident and into Thursday.

Forensic officers in white suits combed the area for clues and laid down evidence markers. Those living nearby spoke of their shock.

One said: "Another resident, a man who wouldn’t give his name, said: “I heard the police coming and they were still here in the morning, but we didn’t know what happened.

“There are a lot of kids out here on the streets - they are always riding around. It is a shock to hear someone has been shot and I hope they recover.
