FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ One of the gunmen allegedly involved in the June 18 killing of rap artist XXXTentacion has been arrested, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
Investigators say Michael Boatwright, 22, is one of the two armed suspects who wore masks and confronted Jahseh Onfroy, known as XXXTentacion, when he was killed on June 18.
Boatwright, of Fort Lauderdale, was already in custody after his July 5 arrest on unrelated drug charges.
On Tuesday, detectives added a first degree murder charge to those Boatwright is already facing. He was in Broward County's main jail in Fort Lauderdale.
Detectives still are seeking a second gunman, as well as Robert Allen, a 22-year-old man described as a person of interest in the case. Investigators want to find out what he knows about the murder.
Allen is also wanted in Broward County on a felony warrant for violation of probation for drug possession and carrying a concealed firearm.
Dedrick Devonshay Williams, 22, was arrested June 20, and charged with first-degree murder without premeditation, and a probation violation.
Just before 4 p.m. June 18, Boatwright and another armed accomplice confronted Onfroy in an apparent robbery as he was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, the sheriff's office said.
At least one of the suspects fired a gun, striking Onfroy. The sheriff's office didn't say whether it is accusing Boatwright or the other man of killing Onfroy.
Both of the suspects fled in a dark-colored SUV. Williams is believed to have been the driver of the SUV that blocked the path of Onfroy's BMW before the gunfire began.
Onfroy was taken to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff's office withheld many details of its homicide case against Boatwright, including the arrest report.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said sealing those records were part of the investigators' strategy, and that with two suspects still at large � Allen and the unnamed second gunman � the arrest report would remain sealed for now.
"We're not releasing any information about it because we're still looking for two other suspects, including Robert Allen," Israel said. "If we release more information about the case, it may hamper detectives' ability or impede their progress to make those other arrests and take those two individuals into custody."
Israel praised the progress that detectives have made in the case that has generated headlines across the country and shined a spotlight on the career of the young artist who grew up in Broward County, lived in Parkland and was just 20 when he was killed. An open casket viewing of the performer that was held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise drew massive crowds of young mourners.
"Our detectives have been working feverishly on this case," Israel said. "I'm so proud of our homicide unit. They are some of the best investigators in the country. They were able to get another piece of this investigation, made an arrest of someone already in custody and yesterday they added a first degree murder charge to him."
