Gunman in clown mask and three others face jail after police chase

A drill rapper who brandished a shotgun at armed police while wearing a clown mask during a high-speed chase was among four men facing jail today.

Officers fired a volley of shots at a stolen BMW in Leytonstone after Lekan Akinsoji, 21, had leant out of a passenger seat holding the gun.

He and three other men in the car have been found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

They were on a “ride out” to target gang rivals on July 26 last year when police gave chase, the Old Bailey was told.

The police driver fired shots at the BMW through his window with one hand on the steering wheel, and also rammed the car.

The pursuit ended when the BMW’s way was blocked and the men were held after a foot chase.

The BMW was riddled with bullets but they were not hit.

A loaded shotgun, a large knife and an axe were found in the car.

Akinsoji was convicted with Darnell Joseph-Newill, 21, Nathaniel Lewis, 23, and Troy Ifill, 22. The BMW driver was not caught.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Topping, of the Trident gangs unit, said: “I have no doubt that their intention was to seriously injure or kill someone.”
