Gunman drives into Black Lives Matter protesters in Seattle and shoots bystander

A man drove his car into a crowd of protesters in Seattle before shooting and injuring a demonstrator who confronted him as he came to a stop.

Seattle police said firefighters took the man who was shot to the hospital and that he was in stable condition.

No one else was injured during the incident on Sunday, police said.

The suspect was seen in the video exiting his car as protesters began to surround it. He brandished what appeared to be a gun as he dashed through the crowd before he turned himself over to police.

Police have yet to announce whether the suspect has been charged after the incident.

The incident was in contrast to the mostly peaceful weekend protests sparked by the death of George Floyd last month while in Minneapolis police custody.

City Council members sharply criticised Mayor Jenny Durkan and Police Chief Carmen Best after police used flash bang devices and pepper spray to disperse protesters a day after Durkan and Best said they were trying to de-escalate tensions.

Authorities said rocks, bottles and explosives were thrown at officers in the city's Capitol Hill neighbourhood Saturday night. Police said via Twitter that several officers were injured by "improvised explosives."

The mayhem in the Capitol Hill neighbourhood came on the ninth consecutive day of George Floyd protests in the city. It followed a large, peaceful demonstration earlier.

It also came a day after Durkan and Best imposed a 30-day moratorium on the department's use of one kind of tear gas.
