A man was charged with attempting to rob a person at gunpoint Monday and then stealing the vehicle of a bystander who tried to help in Austin on the West Side.

Jacobby Fields, 29, allegedly attempted to rob someone at gunpoint Monday in the 5100 block of West North Avenue, Chicago police said.

Fields struggled with the person and a witness, and then stole the witness’s car, police said.

He was arrested after crashing the car in the 5000 block of West Hirsch Street, police said.

Fields was expected to appear in court Wednesday on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and theft.
