'Gunman' arrested with broken leg after falling off scrambler bike leaving families terrified

Families told of their terror after a suspected gunman fell off a scrambler bike, broke his leg and was arrested after being left behind by his pals.

The 26-year-old from Anfield, suffered "serious" injuries when he crashed into an oncoming car on Miles Street shortly after 8pm last night.

The dramatic incident happened four minutes after the biker opened fire on the corner of Erin Close and Laxey Street last night, alongside two others on the back of bikes.

He was later taken to hospital for treatment to a serious fracture to his leg after being arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of a Section 1 firearm.

The occupants of a white car that arrived at the scene removed the bike immediately after the collision.

Families living in the area said they were left frightened to let their children play out in the streets following the dramatic incident last night.

One family told the ECHO: "We were sat in the kitchen when we daughter shouted 'I'm sure I just heard a gunshot'.

"We had just heard the scramblers going along the road and the next thing you knew they were backing up down our street.

"We have a young daughter who sits out playing on the front with us, it makes you think twice about letting her play out there now."

While another resident told the ECHO: "I was watching TV at the time when I heard really loud motorbikes coming down the street.

"I looked out and I saw 2 bikes with two people on each one. They went that fast down the road that's all I saw but I was scared.

"I live on my own so it's really frightening. I've had phone calls from my family last night and today checking to see if I'm okay."

Forensics teams were also spotted by people in the area working throughout the night.

Another resident added: "I thought it was just fireworks at first with it being such nice weather at the moment.

"Then I saw a flash past my window and the sound of two bikes shooting down the road at about 90 miles an hour.

"I'm worried with the kids being off school at the moment because they're out playing of a night.

"It does make you frightened but it's happening all over at the moment."

Shots fired by scrambler riders - 8.14pm

Reports were received that a firearm had been discharged at the junction of Erin Close and Laxey Street at about 8.14pm.

It is believed that two scrambler bikes were involved in the incident.

One of the scramblers had two people on board, whilst the second bike had a single rider on-board.

Witnesses reported hearing the bikes in the street and then three loud bangs.

There are no reports of any injuries and officers have recovered a number of casings at the scene.

Scrambler rider left behind after crash with car - 8.18pm

Just four minutes after the discharge officers were made aware of a road traffic collision involving a silver Nissan Almera and a scrambler bike on nearby Miles Street, close to Park Road Tesco.

The 26-year-old rider of the bike, who comes from Anfield, had sustained a serious fracture to his leg and the occupants of a white car that arrived at the scene removed the bike immediately after the collision.

What are police saying?

Chief Inspector Graeme Towndrow, said: "I can confirm that tonight we have arrested a 26-year-old man from Anfield on suspicion of possession of a Section 1 firearm following the discharge of a gun at the junction Erin Close and Laxey Street in Dingle this evening.

"House-to-house inquiries are currently underway and from talking to the local community it is obvious that the incident tonight has created a great deal of distress and concern for local residents.

"The people who carried out this reckless act have no regard for other members of the public and we are absolutely committed to finding those involved and putting them before the courts.

"Working together with the community we can make a difference and I would appeal to anyone who may have any information in the relation to the incident to come forward so we can take these people off the streets.

"If you supply us with the information we will act on it so that we can make the streets safer for the decent, law abiding people who live in the area.

"We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed the incident in Laxey Close involving the two motorbikes, or the road traffic collision on Miles Street, as information they have could be vital.

"Finally, I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen the people who abandoned the bike in the alleyway off Park Road.

"Park Road is always busy and if anyone walking, or driving in the area spotted anyone walking with a motorbike on Park Road between 8.20pm and 9.15pm I would urge them to come forward too."
