Gun-toting vandals in Ayrshire go on window smashing rampage at cancer charity premises

Gun-toting vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage after going on the rampage at a cancer charity's base.

Six windows and patio doors were smashed at the North Ayrshire Cancer Care centre at Muirside Lodge, Kilwinning after the yobs took pot shots with an air rifle and ran amok with a pole.

A volunteer discovered the trail of destruction on Sunday after popping in to help organise cancer patient transport.

Police are now investigating the incident which is believed to have taken place overnight between Saturday and Sunday.

Trustee Mavis Holland said it was the second time in a month that the building had been targeted by vandals.

"It's heartbreaking," she said.

"Our hard-working band of volunteers do such a good job trying to help people who really need it.

"We organise transport for cancer patients to and from appointments all over Scotland but mainly to the Beatson Cancer Centre in Glasgow.

"For somebody to do this to our premises is just unbelievable.

"We found holes in one of the windows which appear to have been caused by air rifle pellets and it looks like someone has taken a pole of some kind to the rest of them and the patio doors.

"We've been manning the building as a call centre Monday to Friday to make sure we can still help people with cancer.

"We are entirely volunteer-run and having this sort of extensive expense has the potential to affect our ability to deliver services. The damage is going to run into the thousands of pounds.

"It's a big setback for us but it won't stop us from carrying on the good work our volunteers do."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers received a report of damage to windows at Stevenston Road in Kilwinning sometime between Saturday, 13 February and Sunday, 14 February, 2021.

"Anyone who knows who is responsible, should contact police on 101, quoting 1789 of 14 February, 2021."
