Gun seized and man arrested after standoff outside Royal Liverpool Hospital

A man detained after dramatic scenes outside the Royal Liverpool Hospital has been assessed by medics and arrested.

Merseyside Police said the suspect, a 61-year-old man from the Speke area, is being questioned on suspicion of possession of a firearm after police locked down the entrance to the hospital last night into this morning.

A handgun was recovered from the scene.

Emergency services including armed police arrived at the scene on Prescot Street, Liverpool City Centre, at around 10.30pm last night (Wednesday) and put road closures in place.

The suspect, believed to have been inside a parked vehicle, was eventually detained at 10.20am today and taken for medical assessment.

This afternoon a spokesman for the Force gave an update on the case and told the ECHO: "We can confirm that a man has now been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm following an incident outside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital today, Thursday 4 November.

"The 61-year-old man from Speke was detained and medically assessed this morning before being arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. He has been taken into custody for questioning.

"A handgun was seized and will be forensically examined.

"We would like to thank the public and staff at the hospital for their patience and understanding."
