Panic struck a Larkhall street on Sunday as residents made reports of gunshots being fired in the area.
Police rushed to the scene at Bogside Road, where it was claimed a firearm had been discharged outside a property.
A frantic search of nearby streets was carried out, with officers scouring the area for the reported weapon.
The force confirmed to Lanarkshire Live that no firearm was found, despite their extensive probe.
A 43-year-old man was arrested in connection with a disturbance, however he was later released without charge, and police confirmed there have been no arrests made in connection with a firearm offence.
Residents in Larkhall grew concerned as the police presence was understood to have increased to surrounding areas including neighbourhoods on the opposite side of the M74.
One local said cops closed off a part of Mason Street while they investigated the incident.

There were no injuries reported and enquiries remain ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 7.10pm on Sunday, July 18, officers were called to a report of a suspected firearm discharged outside an address in Bogside Road, Larkhall.
"A full search of the area was carried out and no firearm was found.
"There were no reports of anyone injured and police enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident."
