Gun and ammo found during digging operation near Luke Kelly statue in Dublin

A gun and several rounds of ammunition were found during a digging operation in Dublin.

Road workers made the discovery at Guild Street near the Luke Kelly statue on the Royal Canal Greenway opposite Spencer Dock Bridge this afternoon.

A suspected firearm was unearthed along with a number of live rounds of ammunition.

A garda spokeswoman said: "It appears at this time that the items have been in situ for a prolonged period of time.

"The scene was preserved and an examination was carried out. Investigations are ongoing."
