AUSTIN, Texas _ Austin entrepreneur and 3D-printed gun activist Cody Wilson was sentenced Thursday to seven years on probation after pleading guilty last month in a sexual assault case in which he was accused of having sex with an underage girl last year.
Wilson, who sparked a nationwide legal fight over the constitutionality of firearms made with a 3D printer, struck a plea deal with Travis County prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of injury to a child. In exchange, he would receive a recommended sentence that would keep him out of prison but require him to register as a sex offender for the seven years of deferred adjudication probation.
"It was a fair resolution for everyone." said Joe Turner, Wilson's lawyer. Wilson did not comment when approached by reporters outside of the courtroom.
Wilson, who is undergoing sex offender therapy and must inform the court if he has children during the probation period, also must pay a $1,200 fine and $4,840 in restitution to his victim, and serve 475 hours of community service.
Wilson forfeited his firearms last year when he was released from jail on bond and will not be able to own a gun while he's on probation.
Prosecutors say Wilson arranged to meet up with the teen girl in September 2018 after connecting with her on the dating website SugarDaddyMeet.com. Wilson and the girl met in the parking lot of an Austin coffee shop before going to a hotel and having sex, according to an arrest affidavit. The girl told investigators that Wilson paid her $500 when the two parted, the document stated.
