Gulls 'intentionally' killed by driver after being lured onto road with chips

A driver in Taunton "intentionally" ran over gulls after luring them with chips placed on the road.

The driver waited for the gulls to be attracted by the food and then drove head-on at the birds with the intention to seriously harm them, according to witnesses.

The actions killed five gulls in total and injured others and the RSPCA is determined to find the driver responsible.

An appeal has been launched for witnesses who saw a gold-coloured Volkswagen Caddy on Canon Street around 9.20pm on Tuesday, July 2, reports Somerset Live.

The incident between the driver and the gulls took place in Taunton (GRAHAM YOUNG)

The man has a disabled driver's badge on his car and police will be looking to speak to him when identified.

A spokeswoman for the animal welfare charity described it as "an unacceptable and intentionally cruel way to treat animals".

She added: "We understand chips had been placed in the road and that the driver sped up and aimed at the birds before driving away as they struggled with broken wings and other horrendous injuries in the road.

"We'd like to speak to anyone who saw what happened, or from anyone who has dash cam or CCTV footage from around the time this happened that can help with our investigation.

"They can contact the RSPCA inspectorate appeal line in confidence on 0300 123 8018."

All wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is illegal - except under licence - to intentionally take, injure or kill wild birds or interfere with their nest or eggs.

The maximum penalty, if found guilty, is six months in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
