
The six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council announced on Thursday the approval of a Kuwaiti proposal to establish a unified network for food supply security, noting that the GCC General Secretariat was asked to start technical studies.
The announcement comes amid severe economic repercussions that have engulfed the world, as a result of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
In a statement on Thursday, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Trade and Industry said that GCC ministers discussed the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the Gulf States and food security.
It added that regular coordination meetings were held between the ministers of trade to ensure the flow of goods within the GCC and resolve any emerging obstacles.
The statement also revealed the ministers’ decision to approve Kuwait’s proposal to establish a unified integrated Gulf food security network and to instruct the GCC General Secretariat to begin with the relevant technical studies.
Kuwait called earlier this month for the establishment of a unified food security network at the level of the Arab Gulf states to counter the repercussions of the pandemic.
The GCC Committee on Trade Cooperation held its second extraordinary meeting on Thursday through a video conference. the session was chaired by Eng. Sultan Al-Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, with the participation of the Ministers of Commerce in the GCC countries.
