‘Gujaratis paid Rs 2,377 a minute in mask fines’

AHMEDABAD: The people of Gujarat pay Rs 2,377 every minute for not wearing a mask.

This was revealed on Thursday when the state government, in reply to a question tabled in the assembly, said that it has collected Rs 249.81 crore from people who violated the mask rule over the past two years.

The government said that a total of 36.27 lakh people were fined by Gujarat police between February 1, 2020 and January 31, 2022 for not wearing masks.

About 52,907 people refused to pay the fine on the spot.

The government initially collected Rs 200 as fine which was raised to Rs 500. From August 2020, the fine for not wearing a mask was increased to Rs 1,000.

During this period, a total of 6.79 lakh people in Ahmedabad city were fined for not wearing mask. The fine collected from Amdavadis in past two years was Rs 54.33 crore. In 2020, the fine collected from 3.65 lakh offenders was Rs 27.85 crore. About Rs 27.49 crore was collected from 3.13 lakh offenders in 2021.

People in the four districts of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara paid Rs 123 crore as fine, while the remaining 29 districts paid Rs 126 crore as fine during the same period.
