Gujarat student loses Rs 1.09 lakh to cyber criminals

RAJKOT: A student of Visavadar town in Junagadh district, Gujarat was cheated of Rs 1.09 lakh by cyber criminals.

The incident took place when he and his friend were doing a process of getting the refund of a failed translation of Rs 800 through Paytm.

Jay Sardhara, an undergraduate student, registered a complaint with cyber police station Junagadh on Tuesday that on May 6 his friend Milan Dobariya had deposited Rs 800 in his bank account of Central Bank of India using Paytm app.

However the amount was not reflecting in his account following which he called his friend Milan.

Milan searched Paytm customer care number from google search in order to get a refund of this amount.

Milan dialed a number he found from search engine and also kept Jay in conference call, the person on other hand impersonated as customer care executive of Paytm and asked Jay to download ‘Anydesk’ application in order to verify his credentials.

After downloading the application, an amount of Rs 9,889 debited, the person on other hand explained that it’s because of technical error and they will get a refund of this amount the next day. When the next day they called on the same number the person gave them a number of his senior.

The ‘senior officer’ asked Jay to open net banking on his computer and using Any Desk transferred Rs 1.09 lakh in two transactions, both the time Jay provided OTP to the caller as he asked.
