VADODARA: A major fire broke out at the plant of Deepak Nitrite company in Nandesari GIDC on Thursday evening. Smoke billowing from the plant enveloped the area that also has some residential colonies. Fire brigade officials from Vadodara rushed to the spot to douse the flames.
Seven workers were hospitalized as they complained of uneasiness after inhaling the smoke. There were no reports of casualties till late night.
Vadodara collector R B Barad said that about 700 people living in the vicinity have been shifted to safer places as a precaution. Firemen were struggling to douse the flames till late on Thursday night. “It is a major call. We are trying to control the spread of fire but we have no idea about any deaths or injuries yet,” a fire brigade official said.
About 15 fire vans were seen spraying foam and water from every direction. Smoke began emanating from one of the manufacturing units and soon the fire spread in the adjacent buildings. The deafening blasts could be heard several kilometres away.
There are several residential colonies near NandesariGIDC and the fire caused panic among the locals who rushed out from the area.
Several teams of police personnel had to be deployed at the spot and they cordoned off the roads leading to the firm.
“We are monitoring the situation closely. The safety and well-being of all our employees, and that of the communities around, is of foremost priority to us. Our teams on ground are facilitating all support. Our communication channels are open round the clock, and we shall continue to provide updates and partner closely with all external stakeholders,” the company said in a statement on Thursday night.
