Gujarat: Clashes erupt in tribal belt, 40 booked in Chhota Udepur

VADODARA: Tension prevailed in Chhota Udepur town on Monday after two groups clashed over a sensitive video that was posted on Whatsapp by two minor boys. Around 40 persons were booked for assault and criminal conspiracy of which seven were detained.

Police also conducted a flag march in Chhota Udepur town on Monday to ensure peace.

According to police, two minor boys had shared a video on their Whatsapp status on Sunday. A group of boys from the minority community got agitated over the video saying that it hurt their religious sentiments. “The minor boys from the majority community got phone calls wherein they were asked to delete the video. The matter escalated on Sunday evening,” said Vanraj Kamliya, police inspector, Chhota Udepur police station.

A group from the minority community reached the temple where theboys had gathered for paying tribute to Kishan Bharwad who was murdered in Dhandhuka. The group first got into arguments with the boys and then attacked them and other persons with iron rods.

Some persons received injuries in the incident that led to communal tension in the town. The cops have deployed additional security in different areas. “We have filed complaints against those who posted the video and the group that assaulted the minors. About seven persons have been detained,” said Chhota Udepur deputy superintendent, A V Katkad.

Some right-wing organizations had also organized a rally in Chhota Udepur on Monday in support of Kishan Bharwad. In Vadodara, Karjan and Padra taluka too witnessed a bandh in support of Bharwad. Rallies were also organized by some organizations in these talukas.
