Guinness World Record broken by bag bigger than nine double decker buses

An eco company in Wiltshire has broken a Guinness World Record by making a bag bigger than nine double decker buses.

The jute bag measures 22.5 metres wide by 14.6 metres high - 11.6 metres longer and 6.1 metres wider than the previous record.

The record attempt was made by Westbury-based eco bag supplier Cotton Bag Co, which enlisted the help of primary school children to decorate the bag before it was displayed by a crane.

Students from Fitzmaurice school helped teams from Cotton Bag Co and digital marketing agency Varn to decorate the bag with messages and images promoting sustainability.

Cotton Bag Co managing director Jon Marling says the company makes “every effort” to figure out how to support sustainable solutions using environmentally friendly materials such as jute, cotton or paper.

He said: “It has been a really fun project and we are proud to have accomplished it with help from Varn and the school children at the Fitzmaurice primary school."

The headmistress of Fitzmaurice school added: “Fitzmaurice was delighted to be asked to help with achieving this world record.

“It has enriched our curriculum and provided the children with a memory they will never forget.  The children were so excited to see the bag being lifted – I think we were all blown away with the size of it."

This record follows a previous record that was obtained by Cotton Bag Co's sister company, Paper Bag Co, in 2015, which created the world’s largest paper bag.

Over the coming weeks, the bag will be cut up into smaller squares and given to the children so they can make their own smaller bag or pencil case from the material.
