Guinness to give six month paid paternity leave to workers in Ireland from July 1

Guinness is proposing a six month parental leave scheme for new dads.

The offer of 26 week paid paternity leave is being described as a game changer for equality in the workplace.

Men currently working for the brewery which is owned by Diageo will be soon entitled this new offer in paid leave.

The offer will match that given to women when taking maternity leave.

This is being labelled as pivotal moment in workers’ rights, the Irish Independent reports.

The initiative will begin from July 1 and all workers will be offered the same leave regardless of gender.

This will also applied despite whether the child is born via birth, adoption or surrogacy and it will apply to parents of all sexuality.

New fathers have been entitled to two weeks paid leave with €245 per week since 2016 under a Government scheme.

The uptake in this, however, has been very low.

Diageo said that they hope this new policy supports employees and allows them to "focus on the joy of raising a young family, while continuing to thrive at work".

Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone has outlined a five year strategy for young families and yesterday revealed the first plans for the early childhood scheme ‘First 5’.

By 2021 it hopes that parents will be individually entitled to seven weeks paid leave to allow children to have an extra 14 weeks care in their first year.

Furthermore, parents of children up to 12 will then be entitled to 26 weeks of unpaid leave.

Mothers will be entitled to breastfeeding breaks up to two years after childbirth.

Diageo Ireland country director Oliver Loomes said: "Our business has always had a strong record of being one of the best employers in Ireland."

Diageo also own Baileys, Smirnoff and Tanqueray, employing 1,200 people in Ireland.
