Guidis fire: Massive fire rips through Airdrie restaurant as owners 'devastated'

A popular Italian restaurant in Airdrie has been destroyed after a huge fire ripped through the building in the early hours of this morning.

Trattoria Guidi (Guidis) regarded an institution in the town, burnt down at around 1am, with firefighters battling to get the blaze under control.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance at the scene.

The restaurant has said they are "devastated" by the fire, but confirmed all staff members are safe.

A statement released by Guidis reads: "Most of you will have heard we had a severe fire at the restaurant last night.

"We are devastated and slowly trying to process what has happened.

"The most important thing is that no one was in at the time and so all of our staff are safe.

"We will let you all know when we have more news. Thank you all for your kind messages and support."

A number of local residents expressed their dismay on social media, with one person tweeting: "Everyone in the local area loves guidis and we all have such happy memories there. Devastating. Hope they can come back from this."

Meanwhile, local MSP Neil Gray shared his sadness over this fire.

He said: "I’m absolutely devastated that Trattoria Guidi has been destroyed by fire overnight. Guidi’s is an Airdrie institution and I’ve enjoyed so many lovely meals there. I hope nobody was hurt and my heart goes out to Carlo and the family as well as all the staff."
