Guides leader breaks down in tears as she recites final promise to the Queen

Thousands of mourners have gathered to mark the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, that will take place on Monday, September 19. It will be the first time since 1760 that a monarch's funeral has been held at Westminster Abbey. This morning, at the Royal British Legion, Cubs, Scouts, Beavers, Guides, servicemen and families have been up since 5am and come together to share this moment and to pay tribute as a community.

One member from Alrewas Girl Guides in Staffordshire was particularly upset as she shared what Queen Elizabeth II meant to her. Amy said: "Obviously out of respect for the Queen, it's the last chance today we have to keep that promise as she's been our patron since 1951. It's quite an emotional day for us all, especially since she's been in Girl Guides since she was four years old. It's just really hard to think our promises are changing."

In tears, Amy recited the Girl Guides' promise to the Queen one last time: "I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the (Brownie) Guide Law."

She said that these words meant a lot to the Girl Guides "especially as she's just been so supportive in everything throughout the girl guiding association which has been really good, especially as we're helping young girls." However, tomorrow, the Girls Guide promise will change and they'll pledge their allegiance to The King.

From 8am, Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service will be broadcast live and Westminster Abbey's doors will open for the congregation to take seats. The day has been declared a national bank holiday which will see many businesses close.
