KOCHI: A 20-year-old guest worker died after falling from a high rise building in Vytilla on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Amarjith Kumar, a native of Gopalganj in Bihar, who was working as a carpenter in the city. He fell from the 17the floor of an under-construction building near Silver Sand Island, Vytilla, which the police suspect was an accident.
According to Maradu police, the accident took place around 9am. Kumar was reportedly removing the wooden mould used for the roof concreting on the 17th floor reportedly near the edge of the floor. As per the statements of his fellow workers, he accidentally slipped off and fell directly to the third floor.
Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, the doctors declared him brought-dead. Owing to the impact of the fall from such a height he sustained multiple severe injuries and he was beyond saving, said the police.
Maradu police have registered a case for unnatural death. The post-mortem has been completed and the body has been released.
However, the police are also taking statements from other workers and the worksite supervisor to check if any safety lapses were there and all regulations were followed. “Prima-facie, it was an accident but we are investigating to confirm it,” said a police officer.
