Guest 'felt sick' after dinner served on 'rusty bin lid' at Edinburgh hotel

A guest was left disgusted after her dinner was served up on a 'rusty bin lid' in an Edinburgh hotel.

Ossie Stewart, from Montrose, travelled to the Moxy at Edinburgh Airport on April 24 for one night, having stayed with the branch on multiple occasions.

She told Edinburgh Live she was left feeling 'sick' after making the shocking discovery while tucking into a plate of nachos after a long day's travel.

Arriving on a circular metal dish, the food was placed on a thin paper slip on top of a rusting plate underneath.

Describing it as a "rusty bin lid" Ossie said: "I'd been eating it for a while when I realised, I actually felt a bit sick on seeing what I had been eating from.

"When I did speak to a manager he was fine and removed the item from my bill, but even his attitude didn't seem bothered about it, it was very blasé.

She added: "It was more the attitude that bothered me, you would not expect a chef in a four-star hotel to be serving meals up on that.

"The hotel is right at the airport and it doesn't give a great impression of Scottish tourism or hospitality, which is usually great."

To make matters worse, her colleague ended up being charged a £100 fine while waiting to pick her in the hotel car park as she complained to the manager.

Furious at a further inconvenience, she added: "My colleague had arrived ten minutes early to pick me up, and because I was having that conversation with the manager while checking out he ended up waiting around 20 minutes.

"I was mortified to hear he had been fined after trying to do me a favour, again I phoned the hotel to sort it and although they said they would sort it, it was that same blasé attitude, which you just don't expect."

A Moxy Edinburgh Airport spokesperson said: "As soon as the issue was raised with us, we immediately apologised for this genuine mistake, and refunded our guest’s meal and waived the parking fee.

"We agree that this dish was not in an acceptable condition, the discolouration of the dish was obscured by the liner on which the food is served.

"This clearly not reflective our normal high standards and we have now offered her a free night at the hotel in order to experience our usual level of hospitality and naturally to say sorry.

"All our dishes have been re-checked, and these stainless steel platters have been removed from service.

"We always want our guests to have a great time when they stay with us, so we take all concerns seriously and will speak to our team on duty during this time."
