Gucci are selling a pair of shorts similar to those worn by GAA players for a mere €550.
With Paul Mescal being branded a style icon, the popularity of GAA shorts as a fashion item is on the rise after the former Kildare minor player wore them in Normal People.
Men’s fashion bible GQ has announced that the tiny sports attire he wears both in the show and jogging outside his home in London have become the must-have style item of the season.
“If you’re not wearing your boxers as shorts then you’re doing it all wrong,” the magazine said.
“This summer’s biggest shorts trend is shorts so short, floaty and, well, alarmingly breathable that they might as well be your boxers.
“Paul Mescal, the hunky alabaster actor from across the Irish Sea, is the surprise style icon of the lockdown summer.
“Not only did Mescal, who plays Connell Waldron in the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People, cause a ruckus on the interweb with the Roxanne First chain necklace he wore in the show but last weekend he also went out for boozy picnic in London wearing a pair of shorts so minuscule they might well have been his boxers.”
And the magazine declared of the 24-year-old’s sartorial style: “Once again Mescal was right on the money given that short shorts are set to be one of the biggest trends of the summer.”
The fashion mag said the current trend was now short shorts “with an altogether more floaty and, ahem, intimate aesthetic.”
“And though I’d usually say that this is a high-summer weekend trend only, the reality is that we’re all going to be working from home until at least August, which means that, in my opinion, you should make like Mescal and go for your life,” said fashion writer Teo van den Broeke.
“The look is all about making the most of your pins and showing off that hard-earned lockdown tan.”
The magazine listed shorts similar to those worn by Mescal that you can purchase online, with a pair of Gucci ones top of the list for €550.
They are described as: "Crafted from waterproof nylon, these swim shorts are completed by an elastic waistband with drawstring. The green and red Web ribbon runs down the sides and gives them an athletic feel with the Gucci jacquard label."
