The Guardian has been honoured with two awards at the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers’ (WAN-IFRA) European Digital Media Awards 2017.
The awards celebrate the best in digital innovation from publishers across Europe.
The Guardian was awarded best news website for theguardian.com. Judges commended the website for its “clear usability and organisation, its rich information, and its inherent multimedia values.”
The Guardian’s first virtual reality experience, ‘6x9: A virtual experience of solitary confinement’ won best use of online video, with judges praising the experience as: “An incredible example of groundbreaking storytelling.”
‘The dark side of Guardian comments’ received a special mention from judges for “cleverly using data visualisation”, along with the Guardian US’s ‘Anywhere but Washington’ video series which explores what America’s most overlooked people and places reveal about the divided nation. Commenting on Anywhere but Washington, one judge said: “This entry shows what a small but powerful and experienced team can accomplish. Each piece told a different story but all are connected at the same time.”
