Guardian Viral Video Chart

Barely a month after topping the MediaGuardian 100, Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt has now scaled the dizzy heights of the Viral Video Chart. One can only assume a lifetime's ambitions have been ticked off in one summer.

Schmidt's turn at the Seoul Digital Forum in May has been picked up on a few blogs: he is asked to define Web 3.0.

"My prediction is that Web 3.0 will be seen as applications with a number of characteristics. They are small, the data lives in in a cloud, applications will run on any device - PC or mobile, applications are fast and customisable, distributed virally through social networks and email...

"That's a very different application model than we've ever seen in computing - very different from the mainframe era, the PC industry and likely to be very, very large."

You have been warned.

Outside corporation world, things are heating up a little. Literally. This 83-second video shows anyone who cares to watch how to mash a Maglite and DVD laser together to create, well a powerful, burning laser thing that can explode a balloon or light a match. Is that a good thing?

Until now kids were just annoying pop stars with laser pointers. Now they can disfigure them.

Hot on the heels of the Phillipine prisoner Thriller, this week we're treated to Thriller, Indian-style. What can I say? It's... very much in the spirit of the original?

We have the rare treat of an Englishman in the VVC in the curvacious form of Paul Merton, visiting a man in China who "grows" robots out of other people's rubbish. Mr Woo has been doing it for years, without any formal training: like Merton says, if he'd had a university education he'd be running China's space programme by now.

The wife, however, has never felt the same since Mr Woo blew up their family home: "After that fire I really wanted to leave him. Other people's husbands make money - and he just builds robots. I can't bear it."

And let us not forget those who do not fare so well in the cruel world of internet video.

Tay Zonday's Chocolate Rain is fast becoming an internet classic, up there with the Numa Numa kid. His own version of the video has had 4.3m views, so at the very least that's 4.3m people cursing him on the way home when they can't stop the infuriating melody going round their heads.

You'll be delighted to hear there's a whole Tay Zonday back catalogue available on his YouTube channel that includes the memorable "Rainbow Connection", the irresistible "Get It Back" and the rather prescient "Internet Dream".

Lyrics include "I'm eating ketchup to pay for a Hummy". This has caused some mirth.

Oh, and Tay also covers of Edelweiss and the Rick Astley "hit" (I may have lost a consonant there...) Never Gonna Give You Up.

... are you still there?

Oh. You've gone.
