The 37th annual Guardian Student Media Awards has opened for entries today. The awards celebrate the work and achievements of the country’s most talented students planning to enter the journalism and media industry. Previous winners include the Guardian’s Egypt correspondent Patrick Kingsley, executive editor of opinion Jonathan Freedland, and The Observer’s chief political commentator Andrew Rawnsley.

For the first time there will be a Student Media Startup of the Year and Student Multimedia Journalist of the year category. Both join the award’s more established categories which include Student Publication of the Year and Student Website the Year. The entries will be judged by journalists from across the industry and all shortlisted entries will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at the Guardian in December. Winners gain a place on the Guardian’s journalism masterclass and a two week work experience placement, whilst runners-up receive one week’s work experience.

Applications are open to students 18 and over (with a valid NUS card or student card) on a higher education course. Full entry requirements can also be found on the site.
