The Guardian Student Media Awards is open to entries, offering budding journalists at UK universities the chance to be recognised for their work on student publications in print and online.

The awards – in their 36th year – have launched with new categories and a revamped judging panel. Entries are open until 11 September.

There are two new categories, student startup of the year – open to any publication launched within the past three years – and multimedia journalist of the year, covering students working in video and audio.

This year’s judges include senior journalists and editors from across the UK media including the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Independent, Financial Times, the BBC and the New Statesman. The full list of judges will be announced in coming weeks.

The shortlist will be unveiled in early November, ahead of an awards ceremony at the Guardian offices at Kings Place in London on 1 December.

Guardian editor-in-chief Katharine Viner will open the evening, with Channel 4 presenter Rick Edwards returning as host.

The awards have helped launch the careers of scores of journalists working across the media at outlets including the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Times, the New York Times and BuzzFeed.

Winners and runners-up will be offered work experience at the Guardian, and the winners will also receive a free place on a Guardian masterclass.
