Guardian nominated for seven Webby awards

Our Webby-nominated video on how big supermarkets are selling prawns in a supply chain fed by slave labour

The Guardian has been nominated for seven Webby awards for its digital output, including a documentary detailing the use of slave labour in the supermarket prawn supply chain and a video explaining how smartphones snoop on their owners.

Other nominations for the awards, which are designed to recognise “excellence on the internet”, include the Guardian’s new website and it’s long-form content section, The Long Read. The nominations are part of the People’s Voice section of the awards and you can cast your vote for any of the Guardian’s entries here.

The Supermarket Slave Trail documentary took six months to gather evidence about workers on trawlers supplying prawns that were shipped to supermarkets including Tesco, Aldi, Walmart and Morrisons.

The revelations resulted in pressure on the Thai government to crack down on the boats, where insubordinate slaves were tortured and sometimes murdered.

The Psst! Your Phone is Snooping on You video came about following revelations of the detailed location records being stored on smartphones that shone a light on just how much information companies including Apple and Google are able to gather.

The video looked at not just the phone-makers, but also the apps on phones that can suck up data, while providing advice on what people need to know and whether they can do anything about it.

The video used a selection of archive video content, modern stock footage, motion graphics and some animation.
