Sarah Boseley, the Guardian’s health editor, has won the staff journalist consumer media award from the Medical Journalists’ Association for a second year running.
Boseley’s coverage of issues such as the Ebola epidemic was praised by judges who described her writing as “unusual and of a consistently high standard”.
Olivia Timbs, former editor of the Pharmaceutical Journal and a judge for the prize, said: “Her contributions ranged from an analysis of the use of ketamine that helped the international lobby prevent any restrictions in its use to a piece about the tribulations of launching a clinical trial during the Ebola epidemic … The judges all agreed: she gives you a sense of adventure.”
Commended in the same category were Steve Connor of the Independent and Andrew Gregory of the Daily Mirror.
Among the other winners were the BBC’s Nick Triggle, blogger of the year; Matthew Hill of BBC Points West, regional journalist of the year; and Will Hazell of Health Service Journal, young journalist of the year. The award for a staff journalist writing for a specialist audience went to Helen Thomson of New Scientist. Editor of the year went to Jenni Middleton of Nursing Times.
