Guardian Daily: World watches as Copenhagen climate talks begin

The landmark UN summit on tackling climate change begins today in Copenhagen, and the Guardian is among 56 newspapers around the world to unite behind the same leader column, calling on world leaders to rise to the challenge of brokering a meaningful and binding accord. Leader writer Tom Clark, who was one of the contributors to the article, explains how it came about.

China is the world's biggest carbon emitter, and its science and technology minister has struck an optimistic note in an interview with the Guardian. Jonathan Watts, our Asia environment correspondent, says setting targets for developing countries will be a key part of the Copenhagen talks.

As negotiators begin the crucial 14-day summit, we hear from Alun Anderson, the former editor of New Scientist and author of a book called After The Ice, about how global warming has affected the Arctic.

Ed Pilkington speaks to officials and students at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, which is refusing to graduate overweight students unless they take a healthy living course.

Actor Sigourney Weaver tells Ed about her new film, Avatar, which sees her reunited with Aliens director, James Cameron.

And we hear the story of the Securitas gang from Howard Sounes, author of Heist: The True Story of The World's Biggest Cash Robbery.
