Guardian Daily: World waits for President Obama

At last, Barack Obama is sworn in today as the 44th president of the United States. A historic moment - America's first black president. Guardian America editor Michael Tomasky says there's enormous optimism among the American public, despite the huge challenges facing the new leader after eight years of George Bush.

Meanwhile, there's nervousness among ministers after the government announced a second multibillion-pound bail-out of the banks. Economics editor Larry Elliott looks at the likely effects of the package, while political editor Patrick Wintour assesses the mood among MPs. Patrick also looks at the Tory reshuffle, and the return of former chancellor Ken Clarke.

We hear from Gaza resident Ahmed Abdul Rahman Hassan Elimqaid, whose house was destroyed by Israeli shells. Our correspondent Rory McCarthy surveys the damage in Gaza City.

And John Hooper reports from Rome on a spat between fashion giants Giorgio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana.
