Guardian Daily: Unemployment tops 2 million

UK unemployment is now higher than 2 million. The claimant count rose by 138,000 in February - the steepest monthly increase on record. Larry Elliott, our economics editor, considers how bad Britain's recession will get.

Josef Fritzl is due to be sentenced today after his shock admission that he caused the death of one of the seven children he fathered with his daughter, Elisabeth, who he imprisoned in his cellar. Kate Connolly reports from St Pölten in Austria.

In the United States, $165m was paid last week in bonuses to seven executives of AIG - after the federal government had bailed out the insurer, which lost $100bn last year. Edward Liddy, AIG's chief executive, was questioned yesterday by US Congress. Daniel Nasaw reports from Washington.
