Guardian Daily: Turmoil in Gaza

As more than 100 people are killed following a weekend of missile strikes and rocket attacks between the Israelis and the Palestinians, we ask Rory McCarthy, our Middle East correspondent in Gaza, where this leaves the peace process. The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, says all negotiations with Israel are off.

News that is likely to upset lots of pushy parents: today is the day local authorities let mums and dads know whether their child has got a place in their chosen school and those with middle class backgrounds are finding the task increasingly hard. Our education editor, Polly Curtis, has the details of a Guardian survey.

Russia went to the polls over the weekend to vote for its new president. Public sector workers were even told what box to tick or face the sack. With more than 99% of votes counted, President Vladimir Putin's chosen successor, Dmitry Medvedev, secured more than 70%. We ask our man in Moscow Luke Harding if a new leader could help thaw frosty relations between Britain and Russia.

We cross to Texas for an update on the US presidential race to the White House. Hilary Clinton held large leads in the polls there until recently, but Democratic rival Barack Obama has turned things around again. Our Washington correspondent Ewen MacAskill tells us how.

And finally Rachel Williams reports from Gatwick airport – the new hotel for the homeless. Many temporary residents check in but rarely check out.
