Guardian Daily: Speaker re-elected as new parliament begins

Michael White is in the House of Commons on the first day of the new parliament after an election that swept hundreds of MPs out of office – and hundreds of new ones in.

The Speaker John Bercow's re-election was the major business of the day and despite some rumblings of discontent he was sent back to the chair by colleagues.

Bercow was not a unanimously popular figure in his first term in the job but we hear from some of the MPs who have come to respect him.

Jonathan Isaby of ConservativeHome says the Speaker is a champion of the backbenchers and will be an important figure in helping hold the new government to account.

Meanwhile as the Labour leadership contest is set to continue until 25 September, we hear from Labour MPs Frank Field and John Woodcock on what qualities they'll be looking for in Gordon Brown's successor.

Back in the studio, Jon Dennis hears from Kate Connolly about the two German girls freed by Saudi agents from their abductors in Yemen, and Rebecca Smithers catches up with Lord Coe, who explains how London 2012 organisers plan to provide enough food and drink for the athletes in the Olympic village.
